Lewis & Clark 1806 Bike Trail

Project Location:

Morton County, along Highway 1806 beginning at the Old Red Trail intersection and proceeding north eight miles to Morton County Highway #140.

Project Description:

The proposed project consists of the construction of a 10 foot wide asphalt shared-use path from the intersection of Old Red Trail north along Highway 1806 to the proposed Harmon Lake Recreational Development Area which is near Morton County Highway #140.  The overall length of the project is approximately 8 miles.  Because of the length of the project, it is proposed to build it in three segments.  The first segments will be three (3) miles.  The second segment will be about three (3) miles and the third segment will be about two (2) miles.  The proposed section will consist of 4 inches of Hot Bituminous Pavement surface and 5 inches of aggregate base laid upon a graded and prepared subgrade.

How this project relates to surface transportation:

Function:     The proposed trail will be an important link in the overall trail system that is coordinated between the city of Mandan and Morton County.  The shared-use path would parallel a state highway and follow the historic route of explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.

Proximity:   This shared use trail will link the existing trail on Old Red Trail to the residential area in north Mandan and the ever growing number of subdivisions along Highway 1806 north of Mandan.  It will also provide direct access to the proposed Harmon Lake Recreation Area.

Impact:       The proposed enhancement provides a safe route for area residents and visiting tourists to travel to and from existing state historical sites, tourism attractions, and recreation areas.  This shared-use path will also remove vehicular conflicts associated with biking or walking along Highway 1806.
